Man killed in hit-and-run collision was 'just yards from his home'
A man killed in a hit-and-run in Wolverhampton was knocked down just yards from his home, neighbours said.
The 63-year-old was crossing Evans Street, Whitmore Reans, when he was struck by a car, which failed to stop.
Emergency services rushed to the spot, near The Wine Shop, just after 10pm on Saturday.
Paramedics worked for an hour in an effort to revive him but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
A resident, who heard the impact, said the victim, whom she knew by his first name of Peter, was on his way to meet his wife after her late shift at the nearby Asda.
She said: “He regularly met her from work and they walked back together. She was panicking when he didn’t turn up and was trying to ring him on his phone.
“He was an extremely friendly person, always willing to chat, and very kind-hearted.
“He’d lived in the road for years with his wife and mother-in-law. You’d see him painting and decorating sometimes. Something needs to be done about the speed cars do, we’ve campaigned for years about it.”
Neighbour Richard Clark, 68, said that residents’ cars were damaged on a regular basis by speeding motorists.
He added: “We’ve seen hit-and-runs before, but now someone has been killed. It was only a matter of time.”
A stretch of the road was blocked off as police and ambulance crews worked at the scene but the cordon as removed yesterday.
A silver Mercedes, believed to have been involved, was found nearby.
A 48-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remained in police custody yesterday.
Police are appealing for witnesses and any dash-cam footage of the incident.
Sgt Dean Caswell, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “I would urge anyone who may have seen or heard anything, to get in touch as soon as possible.”
