Drug-drive suspect in custody as teenager critical after Wolverhampton crash

A suspected drug-driver has been arrested after a crash left a teenager critically injured in Wolverhampton.

The 26-year-old driver was detained after the Audi he was driving hit a pedestrian in Wolverhampton Road, Heath Town, on Friday afternoon.

The driver stayed at the scene and was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving under the influence of drugs.

The 19-year-old man hit by the car was left with serious arm and abdominal injuries and remained in a critical condition on Friday evening.

Police, paramedics and two air ambulances were sent to the scene next to the Heath Town estate after the crash happened at around 2.20pm.

A stretch of the road near Grove Street was closed for several hours for drivers heading towards the city centre as collision investigators examined the scene.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: "We were called to a serious collision involving a black Audi and a pedestrian.

"A 19-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious arm and abdominal injuries. He’s currently in a critical condition.

"The driver, aged 26, remained at the scene and was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, and driving under the influence of drugs.

"A collision investigation is currently underway. Those who witnessed what happened, or with dashcam footage are asked to get in touch quoting log number 1516 of 20/09/19.

A West Midlands Ambulance spokesman said the pedestrian was treated for "multiple serious injuries" and taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

Two ambulances, a paramedic officer, the Midlands Air Ambulance Critical Care Car, the Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Staffordshire attended the scene.
