Police appeal after West Bromwich Albion fan injured in suspected hit and run
A West Bromwich Albion fan has been seriously injured after a hit and run near to The Hawthorns stadium after a match.
The supporter was hit by a car on Kenrick Way at around 10.20pm on Wednesday outside the ground after the club’s 1-1 draw with Reading in the Sky Bet Championship.
The 49-year-old suffered “potentially serious injuries” and was taken to hospital for treatment. He remained in hospital today.
West Midlands Police are now hunting the driver, who fled the scene after the crash.
Traffic officer Pc Amratpal Singh said: “I am appealing to anyone who was in the area and hasn’t spoken to us about what they saw to come forward.
“The offending car would have significant damage to its front and we need to speak to anyone that has noticed anything unusual about a neighbour’s car or who has dash-cam footage leading up to, during, or after the incident.”
A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We received multiple 999 calls at 10.20pm to reports of a road traffic collision between a car and a pedestrian on Kenrick Way, West Bromwich. An off-duty nurse was on-scene to give first aid before ambulance crews arrived.
“We treated a man, the pedestrian, for potentially serious injuries and he was taken on blue lights to Sandwell Hospital for further treatment.”
The family of the victim say dozens of people were in the area at the time – and are also appealing for people to contact police with what they saw.
One relative, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “Albion fans are a strong and close community. We are asking for witnesses to come forward and tell police what they saw that night.”
