Police officers hit by car in Smethwick during pursuit

Two police officers were injured after being hit by a car trying to flee arrest in Smethwick.

West Midlands Police were trying to stop the blue Ford Focus in Bowden Road on Sunday afternoon, following reports it was acting suspiciously in the area.

The vehicle attempted to flee the scene just before 3.30pm on June 16 and damaged several parked cars in the residential street.

And as officers attempted to arrest the individuals in the car – they were struck by the vehicle, causing them minor injuries.

Two men were arrested and the incident has been referred to the Independent Office of Police Conduct.

A 33-year-old was arrested and taken to hospital with a head injury, where he remained on Monday. While at 18-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of theft has been bailed pending further enquiries.

A spokesman from West Midlands Police said: "Officers were called to Bowden Road in Smethwick, Sandwell just before 3.30pm on Sunday, June 16, following a report of suspicious behaviour involving a blue Ford Focus car.

"The occupants of the car attempted to flee the scene and damaged several parked cars in the road.

"During an arrest attempt, the driver struck two officers with the car, causing them minor injuries.

"A self-referral to the Independent Office of Police Conduct and the force’s Professional Standards Department has been made, as is standard procedure with all incidents of this nature."

Anyone with information about the incident, or witnessed what happened on Sunday afternoon, is asked to call West Midlands Police on 101, quoting incident reference number 1558 of June 16.
