Woman seriously injured after being hit by car in West Bromwich

A man has been arrested after a crash left a pedestrian with "life-changing injuries" in West Bromwich.

The pedestrian, a 59-year-old woman, was walking along the pavement of Great Bridge Street at around 8.20am on Thursday when she was hit by a Ford Focus, West Midlands Police said.

She suffered serious injuries to her leg and a 28-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.

Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes said: "The pedestrian has suffered life-changing injuries to her leg and we need the help of the public to assist us in our investigation to establish exactly what took place.

"I would ask people who were in the area at the time, and saw what happened, to contact us immediately.”

The man remained in police custody on Thursday afternoon.

West Midlands Ambulance Service sent one ambulance, a paramedic officer and a MERIT trauma doctor to the scene.

An ambulance service spokesman said: "We were called at 8.20am to reports of a collision between a car and pedestrian.

"We treated one patient - a pedestrian who was a woman - for a serious injury.

"She was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for further treatment."
