Police issue dispersal order after fatal stabbing

Police authorised the order today, lasting for the next 48 hours, in the Harborne and Quinton areas of the city.

This means officers can ask groups of two people or more to leave the area if they are suspected of doing anything wrong.

This comes after an 18-year-old was killed in Tennal Road, Harborne, at around 7.15pm on Wednesday.

A 19-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and will be questioned in due course, a West Midlands Police spokesman said.

Detective Inspector Michelle Allen, from the force’s homicide team, said: "A young man has sadly lost his life and we are keen to hear from anybody with information which can assist our enquiries."

Councillor John Cotton, cabinet member for social inclusion, community safety and equalities at Birmingham Council, said: “I was absolutely devastated to hear of the senseless and tragic death of another young person in our city, and our thoughts go out to the victim’s friends and family.

“It is quite clear we have to do much more to drive violence and knife crime off our streets. Our young people deserve better and everyone has a part to play in this response from individual citizens through to the council and other public services.

“I'll be working with West Midlands Police, the West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner, city council colleagues and residents to do this. We have to co-ordinate our efforts to deal with this national emergency.”
