The 36-year-old said: “I was smoking outside my house and I saw the Audi hit the BMW.

West Midlands Police Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes has appealed directly to the driver of the blue Audi S3 to come forward, following the fatal crash.

Speaking to the Express & Star, Det Sgt Hughes said: “A direct appeal to the Audi driver – you know you have been involved in a collision.

“Maybe you didn’t quite know the full circumstances at the time when you ran off, but you certainly do now.

“You know that collision has left two very young children dead.

Det Sgt Paul Hughes made an appeal for the driver who fled the scene to come forward

“Do the right thing. Contact us, come and speak to us, tell us your side of this.”

Police have not released a description of the man they are hoping to speak to.

Det Sgt Hughes added the public had been a great help in the investigation so far, and encouraged anyone who knew the blue Audi driver to come forward.

He said: “To the public I would say thank you to start with. I think it would be wrong of me not to say thank you. We have had some good responses so far, keep it going.

WATCH the police appeal:

“Have a think about the blue Audi and the white Bentley. Do you remember seeing those vehicles together or separate on the Birmingham New Road before the collision. If you did, let us know.

“Did you witness the collision and haven’t spoke to us yet, then please please get in touch. Have you heard anything about the driver or have you got a friend or family member who has that type of car and hasn’t got it now? Or has injuries?. Please come and tell us. And the final thing for the public, please don’t speculate, especially around social media. It doesn’t help anyone.”
