Albert Joseph, 71, had returned from a nearby shop on February 10 where it is believed he took out £700 to pay for various items.

Shortly after returning to his house in Titford Road, four men forced their way into his property.

A violent attack ensued where Mr Joseph was attacked with a hammer to his head, and also stabbed and slashed around the head and neck. His injuries left him with a broken back.

His wife witnessed the attack and Mr Joseph’s six-year-old son, who was at the property at the time, had a knife put to his throat.

Jewellery worth £4,000 and £450 in cash were stolen.
