A dog has died after being stabbed during a burglary at a Black Country home.

An appeal from the dog's owner to catch the 'scum bag thief' responsible has since gone viral on Facebook.

Karl Bates' dog, called Jake, died four days after it was attacked by the intruder at his home in Neachells Lane, Wednesfield, last Thursday.

West Midlands Police has confirmed officers are investigating the incident.

Karl launched a Facebook appeal to track down the culprit on Monday - and by Wednesday morning the post has already been shared more than 70,000 times.

He wrote: "Help wanted my property was burgled on Thursday 24/01/2019 on Neachells lane in Wednesfield.

"The low down scum bag thief stabbed my dog. As a result of his injuries has today died 28/01/2019.

"If you know anyone with bites that they can't account for or know who did this please get in touch.

"Someone somewhere knows who did this.

"Please for once let's use the power of Facebook for good and find whoever did this and get them brought to justice.

"Please share far and wide. This is Jake a.k.a the spoon R.I.P big buddy."

Jake died on Monday, four days after the break-in.

Police are asking anyone with information to get in touch about the tragic incident.

A spokesman said: "We are investigating a report of a burglary at a house in Neachells Lane in the Wednesfield area of Wolverhampton just before 5pm on Thursday 24 January.

"A dog was attacked in the house and has since sadly died from its injuries.
