A freedom of information request from West Midlands Police has found that 535 people were taken to the station between June 1 and December 31, 2018.

That totals just under 90 people each month, and more than 20 a week were booked in at the station for drink driving.

West Midlands Police have confirmed that although the offenders were taken to Oldbury, some of the offences may have taken place in the surrounding regions.

RAC road safety spokesperson Pete Williams said: “Drink driving, whether someone is just over the limit or several times above it, is unacceptable, it ruins lives.

“We urge everyone to think twice about driving to a social function and then drinking.

"The best advice is not to drink at all or to arrange other transport so you can enjoy yourself without the fear and consequences of breaking the law.

"And, for those that have been out drinking it is also essential they ensure they are safe to drive the next day as just going to sleep for a few hours doesn’t necessarily make you legally safe to drive.”

Between June 1 2018 and December 31 2018.

535 people taken to Oldbury for drink/drive related offences, and 178 to Wolverhampton custody station.

It is important to note that these are the custody stations people were taken to and it is not in relation to where the offence took place.
