The 69-year-old suffered injuries to his face and body at his flat in Grove Road, Kings Heath, Birmingham, at around 11.30pm on Monday, December 10, as jewellery and bank cards were stolen.

He was taken to hospital but died in hospital on Sunday, sparking a murder inquiry.

An 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remained in custody last night. However, detectives say they believe more than one person was involved in the attack and has appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

Police say they believe the attackers knew the victim, who has not yet been named.

Detective Inspector Warren Hines, from West Midlands Police's homicide team, said: "A man has tragically lost his life after being assaulted in his own home.

"We understand a mobile phone, bank cards and jewellery were taken but whatever their worth - there can be no price on that of a life.

"We believe those involved were known to the victim and I would urge anyone with information to get in touch as soon as possible."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police via Live Chat at west-midlands.police.uk between 8am to midnight, call DI Hines on 101 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
