The sign, which will now cost around £1,000 to repair, was created for Wilkinson Primary School in Bilston to commemorate the £6 million rebuild after the school was torched by arsonists in 2010.

Video footage was posted on Facebook group Spotted: Bilston and has been watched by more than 40,000 viewers.

The video shows a youth swearing and laughing as he hits the sign repeatedly with a hammer.

The culprit, wearing a light coloured hooded jacket, looks directly at the camera at the end while holding up the hammer.

Headteacher Christina Gibbon said the 510 school pupils now have to walk past the sign each day and see the ‘mindless vandalism’.

She said: “It hasn’t been repaired because we were waiting for the culprits to be found.

The fire at the school in 2010

“That sign was a special sign, we designed it especially as a bit of a celebration for the school being rebuilt.

“It was the week of the anniversary of the fire, why they would do that I have simply no idea.

“There’s got to be some recompense.

“Our school motto is ‘show pride and respect in all that you do’ and we’ve got 510 students who have to walk past that sign every day and they’re seeing mindless vandalism.

"Some of them are children of two years old and they still know they shouldn’t damage other people’s property, so it’s very disappointing, the whole of the community is very disappointed.”

Car attack

Meanwhile, another video posted in the same group shows a youth in a white hooded top smashing the windows of two cars before another in a darker top says ‘let me have a go’ and joins in.

They can be heard laughing as they break the windows to the Vauxhall Corsa and Ford Fiesta.

The footage has caused outrage with many neighbours furious.

One resident, Marie Wentworth, commented on the video saying: “Why the hell would they do this. People have to go and work for their cars and just before Christmas they have to pay for repairs now. They are a disgrace.”

Another, Michelle Perager, said: “What the hell is wrong with people in today’s day and age?”

Lyndsey Gregory saidadded “It’s people like that that give Bilston a bad name and make it look bad.”

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Police said: “Police are investigating a report of criminal damage to a sign at Wilkinson Primary School in Walter Road, Wolverhampton, after receiving a report on November 22 about an incident on October 13.”

To help, people are asked to phone police on 101.
