An elderly woman and her husband were subject to 'extreme violence' when masked knifemen attacked them in their own home.

A £5,000 reward has today been offered after the 66-year-old woman and her 78-year-old husband were attacked with a machete during the robbery near Aldridge.

Both victims needed extensive surgery to repair defensive wounds to their hands and were left with large cuts to their heads.

The woman - whose operation took seven hours - was also left with a bleed to the brain, while her husband suffered a fractured skull.

The horrifying assault happened at about 7.30pm on Saturday, when two masked men broke into the couple's Aldridge home and demanded they hand over jewellery and cash.

Both victims were attacked with the machete before the crooks fled with a Rolex and other expensive watches and a safe full of Euros and Sterling.

The Crimestoppers charity is now offering a reward of up to £5,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the two men responsible.

Pauline Hadley, West Midlands Regional Manager for Crimestoppers, said: “When I heard about the attack and robbery of this couple, I was left absolutely horrified by the details of the ordeal they went through.

“I cannot begin to imagine how scared they were, and it’s awful to think this happened in their own home – the one place they should be able to feel safe.

“This is why I am asking the local community to come forward with any information they might have on the men responsible, to ensure we keep local people safe and ensure nobody else is hurt."

The attack happened at around 7.30pm on Saturday in Bourne Vale.

The suspects have been described as two black males, both in their early 30s and of average build. One is approximately 6ft tall, the other is slightly smaller and both were wearing dark clothing.

One was wearing a dark-coloured bandanna across the face and the other wore a balaclava.

Both the victims sustained serious hand injuries

Detective Chief Inspector Scott Griffiths, from West Midlands Police, said no stone would be left unturned in the hunt to bring the robbers to justice.

He said: “The level of violence was extreme and no-one should be put through what they went through.

"We are putting a team of detectives behind this to bring these offenders to justice.

“We are supporting them as best as we can through this traumatic time and also engaging with the family and giving them the relevant support.

“We have ongoing patrols working around the immediate area where the incident occurred in the community and police are doing everything they can to identify the suspects.

"We are still engaging with both victims and we have a comprehensive forensics strategy around that and we have also done CCTV and house-to-house inquiries.

“We are also engaging with the community to identify them. It is an isolated incident, it is not something that we normally come across.”

Anyone with information on this robbery is urged to contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or via their anonymous online form at crimestoppers-uk.org.
