Woman stabbed by shopping thief in Sainsbury's car park

A man stabbed one woman and threatened another with a knife before making off with their bags in a supermarket car park.

A 57-year-old woman was putting her shopping in her car in the car park outside Oldbury's Sainsbury's Superstore when a man approached her with a knife and demanded her purse.

He pushed the victim into the passenger seat and stabbed her leg, before taking her shopping.

Another woman, aged 58, intervened and was then chased by the man, who threatened her with a knife and stole her handbag.

The 57-year-old was not seriously injured but was taken to hospital where she remained today.

Police were called to the scene in Freeth Street at around 8.30pm yesterday.

The incident happened just metres away from a community knife surrender bin, which was installed in May.

After examining CCTV, officers arrested a 39-year-old man from an address in Hill Top, West Bromwich, and he remained in police custody this morning.
