Armed police arrest man with imitation gun near Walsall Tesco

Armed police swooped on a street in Walsall town centre after a man was spotted with an imitation gun.

A member of the public dialled 999 after a man flashed a black handgun at him near Tesco Extra in Littleton Street West.

Firearms officers were sent to the scene just before 9.30pm on Monday.

The gunman’s description was radioed around to officers and shortly armed police spotted someone matching the description at a bus stop in Darwall Street.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: "He no doubt got a huge shock when firearms officers armed with carbine rifles and a self-loading pistol approached him in the street

"They found an imitation handgun – a ball bearing or BB gun – stuffed inside his waistband.

"He remains in police custody where hopefully the seriousness of his actions are now sinking-in."

A 44-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of possessing an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.
