An alleged burglar being held at HMP Oakwood could not face court because he was ‘under the influence’ in prison, it was heard.

The inmate was first due to appear before Gloucester Crown Court via video link more than a week ago to enter a plea to a charge of burglary at a home in Cheltenham.

But he was said by a prison officer to be too high on drugs or booze to be brought to the video link room at privately-run HMP Oakwood near Wolverhampton.

The female warder told the court that the man was ‘under the influence.’

Judge Michael Harington sighed “Yes, a sign of the times.”

The prisoner has since appeared back before Gloucester Crown Court where he denied an allegation of burglary and will now face trial.
