Ch Insp Gareth Mason, of West Midlands Police, said: “We believe this was a targeted, rather than a random attack.

“We are currently following a number of leads and forensic enquiries are on-going. Officers will be working round the clock to identify those responsible.

“I’d urge members of the public who saw what happened, or know who was involved to contact us as soon as possible by calling 101. Please quote log number 1490 of 26/6/2018."

An officer at the scene, Sergeant Ryder, confirmed a machete was used in the attack.

“A male has been assaulted at around 2.30pm at the back of the Wednesfield House flats," he said.

"He has been taken to hospital where he is currently undergoing surgery.

"We are currently looking for witnesses, CCTV and preserving the scene for forensics”

Resident, Martin Gorings, said: “I have not long got home and didn’t understand why there was so much traffic through Tremont Street.

"It’s not normally like this, the back is usually pretty quiet compared to the main road.

“This is the first lot of trouble I have heard of around here, but I haven’t lived here long.”

No arrests have been made at this stage.
