A police chief inspector and a firearms officer are being investigated over allegations they were caught having sex on duty.

Staffordshire Police has confirmed its professional standards unit is looking into claims which were made in December.

They reportedly involve Chief Inspector Clare Riley, 37, and Andy Wolstencroft, 49, who trains officers in handling firearms.

It is alleged the pair had sex at Staffordshire Police's headquarters in Stafford as well as at a hotel during a work conference and in a police car.

The two have not been suspended or dismissed.

Staffordshire Police passed the matter to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) on December 19.

But the body returned the case for investigation by the Staffordshire force two days later.

A police force spokesman said: "Staffordshire Police can confirm there is currently an ongoing investigation by the force's professional standards unit following an allegation of a breach of the Standards of Professional Behaviour by two members of staff.

"The allegation, which was made in December 2017, concerns a serving police officer and a current member of police staff.

"The matter was referred to the IOPC who decided the investigation would remain as a local investigation for the force. The two members of staff have not been suspended."

He added: "We expect the highest standards of behaviour and integrity from all our staff and any allegation that someone has fallen below these standards will always be thoroughly investigated."

An IOPC spokesman said: "The matter was received from Staffordshire Police following an assessment it was sent back to the force to carry out a local investigation."
