A white flat-bed lorry was used to smash through the front window of the shop.

A group of men entered brandishing hammers and other weapons and threatened staff.

The men smashed display cabinets, while members of staff, fearing for their safety, hid in the back of the shop.

The men took gold and attacked two police officers outside by throwing bricks at them.

They then made off at speed in a waiting black Audi saloon car that headed onto Claremont Road.

One of the officers needed to be taken to hospital for treatment to minor facial injuries.

Violence

Superintendent Richard Youds, from Sandwell Neighbourhood Policing Unit, said: “The behaviour of these men showed that they were prepared to use considerable violence, including attacking a police officer and a police car.

“Thankfully nobody was seriously hurt and the officer is today recovering at home from his injuries having been treated in hospital. We know that there were a large number of people in the area at the time this took place and are appealing for anyone with information about this incident to come forward."

Mobile phone footage shows the chaos of the violent robbery as one man smashed the front of a police patrol car.

The footage shows a truck which appears to have been backed into the jewellery shop setting off an alarm.

The police officer is shown approaching the getaway car before something is thrown towards him.

He is stunned and takes a step back before trying to stop the assailants driving away by hitting the car windows with a baton.

Footage then shows the black Audi saloon car suddenly reversing back towards the shop as three men scurry from inside carrying what is believed to be bags.

Another man is captured on camera hurling a heavy object at the windscreen of a police car.

Damage and debris had been cleared from outside Jai Jewellers

Moments later the getaway car flees at high speed along the pavement - barely seconds before two police cars arrive outside the shop.

Shocked shoppers and passers by then begin to approach the shop as police officers arrive at the scene.

Community campaigner Desmond Jaddoo took to Twitter to raise his concerns after the 'frightening' violent robbery.

He said: "My thoughts and prayers are with all in the area and the services. We need to be joined in trying to make our streets safer."
