Stourbridge Road murder: Fourth suspect arrested over stabbing

A fourth man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering shopkeeper Jaskaran Kang who was stabbed to death in a flat above a shop while three others have been arrested for assisting an offender.

The 24-year-old father was found dead at the property above the Mini Mart on Stourbridge Road, Dudley, in the early hours of Saturday, January 6.

An inquest into the death of Mr Kang, from Handsworth, was opened and adjourned this morning at Black Country Coroner’s Court, where it was revealed he was stabbed nine times and died of a stab wound to the leg.

Detective Inspector Justin Spanner, leading the investigation called Operation Plym, told the hearing that police believe four masked men wielding knives entered the flat trying to steal cannabis.

He added: “Police were called at 2.29am on January 6 to a flat, which was one of three flats above Dudley Wines (Mini Mart), to a male who had been stabbed.

“Upon arrival ambulances were already there.

“Jaskaran Kang was found there with nine stab wounds.

“The cause of death was a stab wound to the leg.

“An altercation occurred and he received stab wounds.”

DI Spanner confirmed three people had been charged with murder then revealed that further suspects had been arrested including another man on suspicion of murder.

Coroner Zafar Siddique adjourned the inquest until the conclusion of the police investigation.

Three people who have already been charged with murder have appeared in court.

They are Reggie Salmon, aged 20 from Stourbridge Road, Dudley, a 17-year-old youth from Newcastle-under-Lyme, who cannot be identified, and Dontay Ellis, 18, from Central Drive, Lower Gornal.

They are scheduled to appear at Wolverhampton Crown Court on March 16 where they are due to enter a plea.

A provisional trial date has been set for July 16.
