Clifford Amaechi, aged 43, was sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court on Wednesday after being stopped by police in Howarth Way, Birmingham on March 24.

He made off and following a short chase on foot he was caught and arrested.

He had attempted to discard a carrier bag which contained 1kg of cocaine.

The cocaine was forensically analysed and found to be 94 per cent pure, and the court accepted that cocaine of this purity shows it is close to its original source.

The wholesale value of the drugs is estimated to be between £40,000 and £50,000, however, the street value would be far in excess of this amount.

Amaechi, of Sandringham Road, Great Barr, had abandoned his Ford Focus car near to the scene and a subsequent search of the vehicle recovered £5,000 in cash.

The court ordered this money to be confiscated as it was linked to drug trafficking.

DCI Ricky Fields, from the regional organised crime unit, said: "This was a highly successful operation that stopped a significant amount of cocaine from reaching the streets and put a prominent drug dealer behind bars.

"We will continue to act on intelligence and information from the public to combat illegal drugs in our communities, and encourage anyone with suspicions about drug dealing to contact us immediately."
