Debenhams thanks staff and shoppers after closure of Wolverhampton store

High street giant Debenhams has thanked staff and shoppers in Wolverhampton following the closure of its Mander Centre store.

Debenhams lasted just two years in the Mander Centre

The retailer closed its doors for the final time on Saturday, just two years after launching as the shopping centre's flagship store.

The closure has delivered a huge blow to the city centre, which is also set to lose Topshop in April.

It now leaves a big hole in a key part of the Mander Centre until it is filled later this year by House of Fraser when it moves from Beatties.

Debenhams bosses have now penned an "open letter" to workers and customers following the closure.

They thanked shoppers for their support "over the years", despite only opening in October 2017.

It is the first time the retailer has addressed the closure since the official announcement was made nearly a year ago.

The company said in a statement: "On Saturday January, 11 Debenhams closed its doors in Wolverhampton for the last time.

"We would like to thank all our customers for your support over the years.

"While this store has now closed, Debenhams remains open for business.

"Your nearest store is in Merry Hill, or you can always shop with us online at Debenhams.com.

"We would also like to thank the local team and our colleagues in the store, who have continued to deliver great service despite the news of the store closure.

"Once again we would like to thank everyone who has shopped with us in Wolverhampton since 2017 and we look forward to extending a warm welcome to you at any of our stores around the country in the future."

Billionaire businessman Mike Ashley will launch one of his first Frasers concept stores, featuring a mix of brands that make up his retail empire, later this year.
