Overall sales were down nine per cent on June 2018 at 8,485.

Sales of Land Rover models fell six per cent to 6,593 with Jaguar sales 20 per cent worse at 1,892.

JLR said it was due largely to the market wide shift away from sedans and sports cars.

For the first half of the year JLR achieved total US sales of 62,405 – an increase of five per cent on 59,566 a year before. Jaguar is up 10 per cent at 16, 282 and Land Rover is up three per cent at 46,123.

“We are proud that Jaguar Land Rover is up for the first half of the year,” said Joe Eberhardt, president and chief executive of JLR North America.

“After setting record sales in previous years, we are beginning to see the industry soften, but are confident that with our robust product offering, featuring award-winning sports utility vehicles across the two brands, we are in a position to maintain our sales momentum.”

Sales of the new Range Rover Evoque were up 16 per cent to 4,928 units for the half year and the Range Rover Sport continued to be the brand’s sales leader with 12,132 units sold

For June, the Jaguar F-PACE continued to lead the brand’s sales performance with 828 units sold and for the first half of the year, the Jaguar E-PACE was up 79 per cent to 2,549
