Kids get together in Heath Town estate for new playgrounds

Young thrill-seekers were in high spirits when a trio of new play areas were finally unveiled in their community.

Children enjoyed an afternoon of fun and games as they came together in Heath Town for the grand opening of the playgrounds.

It comes as the Heath Town estate under goes a multi-million pound revamp, which will see hundreds of new homes built.

The new additions were officially opened by Wolverhampton Homes and council officers at a special get-together on Tuesday.

Shaun Aldis, chief executive of Wolverhampton Homes, said: "The improvements taking place at Heath Town are about more than just upgrading our housing; local people told us just how important good outdoor space is for them, so we’ve provided three great play areas for children to enjoy outdoor play in a safe, family-friendly environment.

"We’re really pleased to welcome local children to enjoy the new playgrounds and in good time for the summer months.

"The estate has a really strong sense of community and we’ve been working closely with residents to make sure that they continue to thrive.”

The Heath Town estate, which was first opened in 1969 by Princess Margaret, is currently under going a £120 million regeneration.

More than 300 homes for sale and rent, including council properties, are planned for the site as part of the revised Heath Town Masterplan.

Workers began clearly the site last year, with plans for the first 40 homes now submitted to planning officers.

Kate Martin, Wolverhampton Council's director for housing, said: "The Heath Town estate is undergoing a huge transformation that will improve the quality of life for everyone living there.

"More than 300 new homes across several sites are to be built at Heath Town for sale and rent and, along with Wolverhampton Homes’ major improvement works, will provide an uplift to the area.

"The opening of these three play areas will provide excellent facilities for the children and families living there and enhance the strong community spirit that already exists.”

The opening of the playgrounds was one of many events lined-up to commemorate Heath Town's 50th anniversary this year.

Other events in the pipeline include a photography exhibition and time capsule.
