The team from Wolverhampton Girls' High School were the only state school in the West Midlands to qualify for the National Schools Netball competition.

It was the first time in the history of the school that the under-16s team had battled against their peers for the title.

Headteacher Trudi Young said: "They were the only state school to qualify in the West Midlands region for the national competition.

"Because of their recent success, the company Paycare provided the team with a generous amount of sponsorship money in order to pay for some new netball kit.

"Therefore the girls’ looked the part and were all very grateful for their support."

The students qualified for the regional finals last November after winning all their games and scoring a total of 128 games.

Regional finals wee held at The Telford Langley School in January, with the youngsters finishing top of their section and making it through to the final against Worcester's The King's School.

They then went on to play at London's Stanborough School, finishing in seventh place out of 19 schools from across the UK.

Mrs Young added: "The standard of netball during the competition was outstanding and the students themselves played amazingly throughout the day.

These students are totally dedicated to the sport, playing for clubs outside of school in addition to the commitment they make in school time and we are extremely proud of what they have achieved and they looked fabulous in their new kit."
