Man flees after late-night collision sees car smash into lamppost

A motorist fled the scene after his car veered off the road and smashed into a lamppost in the early hours.

A 38-year-old man was later arrested not far from the spot on suspicion of failing to stop at the scene of a collision.

The accident on the Birmingham Road in Walsall caused severe damage to both the car and the lamppost although the suspect is believed to have escaped serious injury.

Inquiries into the collision, which occurred at around 2.25am on Saturday are ongoing.

Firefighters also attended the scene and made the vehicle safe for other rescue teams to handle.

West Midlands Police spokesman Mike Woods said the suspect was also being questioned about driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs. He remains in police custody.

Witnesses saw several people emerging from the car following the crash.
