And today is the last chance you have to make a donation by bringing your items to the Express & Star’s offices in Queen Street, Wolverhampton.

The number of items donated to the appeal has soared past the 10,000 mark with more still flooding into our collection points.

Staff at BCA Wolverhampton in Bilston are among those who have dug deep to support the campaign by donating an array of festive treats.

Service delivery manager Mel Knight said: “As a team we just wanted to do something nice for people in a less fortunate position.”

All of the donations we receive are being distributed among a number of food banks and other charitable organisations across the Black Country and Staffordshire.

Since the appeal launched at the start of November, we have been blown away by the support of our readers. Our supermarket donation points have now closed but items can still be brought to our Queen Street offices until the end of today.

We will be making the final deliveries of donations later this week to ensure the charities have the donations in time for Christmas.

We have been asking for donations of festive food, such as mince pies, chocolates and Christmas puddings as well as store cupboard essentials like canned goods, long-life milk, fruit juice, pasta and rice.

The good causes we have been supporting this year are the Black Country Food Bank, which has centres across Dudley, Sandwell and Walsall, The Well (Home of Wolverhampton Food Bank), the Good Shepherd Ministry, based in Wolverhampton, and Cannock and District Food Bank. Chocolates have been passed to the Haven refuge which provides both practical and emotional support services to women and children, who are affected by domestic violence and homelessness.

These have given to youngsters and women to help spread some much-needed Christmas cheer. We launched the appeal for the third year running in response to food banks and charities seeing numbers needing support continuing to rise.

Many are faced with the choice of either eating or heating their home.

Food banks and charities are also supporting many homeless people as well as rough sleepers and ‘sofa-surfers’.
