Witnesses allegedly spotted a group of youths armed with weapons outside Tipton's ACE Academy.

Concerned members of the public contacted police, who rushed to the Alexandra Road school at about 2.45pm yesterday.

But officers found 'no sign' of any young person brandishing weapons near the school grounds.

Teachers decided to stop students from leaving the site before West Midlands Police gave the all-clear.

A force spokesman said: "Officers arrived within minutes and found no sign of anybody with a weapon either inside or outside the grounds.

"As a precaution the school temporarily held pupils back but everyone was allowed out by 3.30pm.

"Neighbourhood officers remained on patrol in the area yesterday afternoon and evening to provide extra reassurance."
