The service at St Leonards Church, Bilston, is scheduled for 11am, before a private committal.

Mr Davies twice led Wolverhampton council, between 1988-92 and again from 1994-2002, in his second term spearheading the campaign to achieve its city status.

He represented the Springvale and Bilston East ward for almost 30 years and was awarded the OBE.

Many tributes have been paid to the highly respected councillor who was first elected in 1973.

His success in establishing Wolverhampton as a city, where predecessors had failed, was described by deputy leader Phil Page as 'a golden legacy'.

He was also known as 'deeply working class' and committed to his home town.

Mr Davies, a retired engineer who lived in Bilston, died on March 28.

He leaves a wife, Mary, and six children.
