Firefighters were called to the scene in Greenfield Lane, Wolverhampton, just before noon today.

They found an elderly man trapped in a Mercedes car under the railway bridge in the Fordhouses area of the city.

Wading through two-and-a-half feet of water, they rescued the motorist before winching his car to dry land.

Engineers from Severn Trent Water were called to investigate but reported that there was nothing wrong with their pipes.

Wolverhampton council are now checking the drains in the area.

They say that the cause of the flood is believed to be a problem with a ditch on private land.

Ten firefighters spent nearly an hour and a half at the scene.

Paramedics were also called but the driver was not injured, said Neil Spencer, spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service.
