Dicky Dodd and Wolfie start One Million Steps fundraiser

By Jessica Labhart | Wolverhampton | News | Published:

An epic fundraiser that sees participants look to complete one million steps started over the weekend.

The launch of One Million Steps saw dozens of walkers gather at Wolverhampton's Molineux stadium on Saturday.

The walk took them from the stadium, through West Park and the city centre in a 5km challenge.

Launched by Signal 107's Dicky Dodd, the aim of the walk was to raise as much money and awareness as possible for city charity the Haven, which supports women and children who are vulnerable to domestic violence, homelessness and abuse.

It was held in October as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Participants and supporters are encouraged to reach the one million steps mark throughout the month with Saturday's challenge aimed at getting walkers to reach the half a million steps point.

It is not yet known how much money has been raised, but the target was around £2,000.

The family-friendly walk also gave youngsters the chance to have their faces painted, meet Wolves mascot Wolfie, and take part in other activities throughout the day.

Walkers were joined by a local marching band and held placards and balloons in support of the charity.

It was the second year that the walk has taken place and organisers were thrilled that it was bigger and better than last year's.

Haven fundraiser Jade Secker said: "It went really really well. We had around 80 people join us for the walk and dogs too!

"We set up a live stream of the walk on our Facebook page so that as many people as possible could see what we were doing and encourage them to get involved in the future too.

"It was great to see all the families and different people all come together for this special walk and make this year's event bigger and better than last year's. Everyone who took part should be so proud of themselves."

The walk was this year sponsored this year by Concero Ltd and Wolves Community Trust for the second time.
