Wolverhampton Crown Court was hit by the power cut

Western Power said the problem was due to a fault in a high-voltage cable in the All Saints area of the city.

It lead to either an all-out loss of electricity or a dip in power, with 180 buildings affected for up to 30 minutes, while many more experienced briefer cuts.

One of the buildings hit was Wolverhampton Crown Court where computers and recording equipment went down. Banks and other businesses in the city centre were also affected.

Western Power spokeswoman Louise Birkett said: "The problem was with an underground cable in the All Saints Road area. There were two brief cuts, the second one caused by engineers trying to isolate the cable which sparked the issue.

"We're not sure exactly how many people were affected in total but we apologise for any incovenience suffered by our customers."
