Dozens of people dressed up as astronauts in a bid to break a Guinness World Record at the opening of Kidderminster Arts and Food Festival

More than 120 people dressed up at Brinton Park on Saturday(19) to try and break the Guinness World Record for the most people dressed up as astronauts in one place.

This year's festival will celebrate earth and 50 years since the first moon landing – and to mark the start, organisers wanted to try a space-themed world record.

And despite attracting 129 people dressed head-to-toe in astronaut gear, the group fell short of beating the record – which currently stands at 257.

Nina Price, organiser, said: "It went really well, but unfortunately we did not break the record. On initial counting, we had around 129 people taking part and the record to beat was 257 – which was by a school.

Among those taking part in the world record attempt were Wyre Forest 6th Beaver Scouts

"But it was fantastic to see everyone getting involved. It was a shame we did not break the record but it was a great start to the Kidderminster Arts and Food Festival.

"Throughout the whole day we had about 550 people come down to Kidderminster's Brinton Park. We had the film orchestra performing space related tunes, circus skills, Darth Vader and Star Wars characters walking about and arts and craft. It has been a great day."

The world record attempt marked the start of the two-week Kidderminster Arts and Food Festival, organised by Wyre Forest District Council, which will showcase music, dance, arts, theatre and for the first time, food. It will shine a light on local and national talent across performing arts and will include live music, theatre, story-telling, craft sessions, pop-up poetry and food markets.

The Kidderminster Arts and Food Festival runs until Saturday, November 2. For more information, visit www.kaffestival.org.uk.
