Lord Bourne of Aberystwyth graced Wolverhampton's Gazebo Theatre in Education with his presence during the rare visit on Wednesday.

It came as part of the minister's nationwide tour which aims to shine a spotlight on faith communities across the UK.

Pamela Cole-Hudson, Gazebo’s chief executive and artistic director, said: "We are truly honoured to have hosted Lord Bourne and to have had the opportunity to showcase all the brilliant work Gazebo does to address important issues and subject areas.

"In particular, sharing often hidden his and herstories, and supporting people who are facing significant hardship to move forward in their lives, through our mentoring programmes and activities for young people and their families."

Members of the Bilston organisation treated the minister to a selection of 'Windrush Shorts', which were filmed this week ahead of Saturday's Windrush Day.

The monologues are based on accounts of people who migrated to Britain from Jamaica during the 1940s and 50s.

Lord Bourne also heard about Gazebo’s HeadStart programme, funded by National Lottery Community Fund, which supports the development of emotional resilience in young people.

He was also told of the theatre company's work exploring knife crime and gangs, as well as the string of summer activities on offer for youngsters across the city.

The minister said: "Large or small, faith communities are often at the heart of a local area – the glue that binds our society together.

"The length and breadth of this country, faith institutions form community hubs and support centres, as well as places of worships."

Gazebo Theatre, based in Wellington Road, has been supporting the community and providing education opportunities since its launch in 1979.

This year marks the charity's 40th anniversary, with the team in the midst of a year-long programme of celebrations to mark the milestone.

It will include a free programme of activities for schools throughout October.
