Halesowen College student working with the stars
A former music student from Halesowen College is celebrating his success in the industry – such as working with famous bands and artists including Paolo Nutini.
Joel Workman, from Kidderminster, studied A-levels in music technology, maths and physics, alongside a BTEC Subsidiary Diploma in music performance.
After completing his studies at the college, Joel, aged 20, moved to the University of Surrey to study music and sound recording.
During university he did a placement at Monnow Valley Studios in Wales, working with UK band The Amazons and award-winning producer Catherine Marks.
The budding producer is now working overseas on a university placement in Brussels at ICP Studios, where he is running the recording software, operating the mixing desk and positioning microphones.
He has also had the opportunity to work with one of Michael Jackson's engineers, Brad Sunberg.
Joel said: "I really enjoy what I do and I love helping people make music. It is also great working of people of different nationalities and being in Europe.
"My time at college helped me in many different ways, maths and physics taught me basic theories needed to understand a lot of things in sound engineering.
"My music technology and performance courses also taught me a great deal and set me up for university and placements."
Craig France, music course leader at Halesowen College, said: "Joel worked extremely hard at College and we are delighted to see him put all his music skills into practice.
"He is getting some really valuable experience and we all wish him well in his future career."
