Deloris Smith, a counsellor for Cruse, and said: "I started 10 years ago this year and it's something that – I'm a trained counsellor – I wanted to do.

"I do adults one-to-one.

"It's very very rewarding for the simple reason someone comes in broken and to see them six, seven or eight sessions later, it does make you want to carry on.

"A few years ago I was made head of fundraising and that's really about trying to get funds in, which is difficult.

"We're funded from donations from sponsored walks, cake sales – you name it. It's the first time I've put a ball on and the support has been great.

"Tonight is to raise money. We need to train some counsellors for young people and children because we've got a waiting list which is not acceptable.

"It's a drive so we can hopefully get some counsellors that stay with us and specially for young people and children.

"We've got a waiting list so we're hoping we can get some more people to come and train to be counsellors.

"We prefer people retired or not working. We get young people on placement but they get the jobs and go and it's very difficult.

"It's very hard for them to work and give their time to Cruse."

DJ Munro and Beverley Knight

The Mayor and Mayoress of Wolverhampton turned out to support the event.

Deloris added she discussed the event with the board before approaching her daughter.

She said: "When I decided to do this, I thought where do I start? So we discussed it with the board and then I approached Bev and said 'can I count on you?'

"She said 'certainly' and she bought a good friend, the DJ.

"It's hard work planning it.

"Rachel Lockett, being a good friend, I spoke to her because it's very expensive to get an event planner.

"So she said she would come on board and brilliant isn't good enough to say how she's been.

"I'm hoping everyone will enjoy themselves. We've got some fantastic prizes for the raffle and for the auction as well.

"I'm hoping we get some good money and people enjoy themselves."

Beverley Knight posted on Instagram: "Last night the amazing people of my hometown raised by the end of the night over £35k for Cruse Bereavement Care.

"That isn’t the final amount as donations were still coming in when DJ Munro was playing his last banger.

"With all the pledges made post-event, that figure is set to rise to more than £40k.

"Thank you everyone who donated auction and raffle prizes! It could not have been done without you."
