He has sold an incredible 30 million singles since launching his recording career in 2009, including 11 that have gone platinum.

And fans can look forward to a night of hits when he headlines Birmingham’s Genting Arena on Wednesday.

A greatest hits set is in store and Jason’s fans will be hoping for such hits as Wiggle, Talk Dirty, In My Head and Whatcha Say.

He has favourites of his own, having started his career with Ridin Solo. In fact, his favourite song is Riding Solo. “It would be Ridin Solo from my first album Jason Derulo because that song helped me through a pretty hard time in my life.

“Also It Girl, from Future History. I wrote that love song quite unexpectedly and I still love it today. I like Talk Dirty and Trumpets from my album Tattoos as well, because at the time I was crazy about wind instruments and their sound. And Want To Want Me from Everything Is 4 brought me into a new stratosphere.”

Jason has a close relationship with his fans and is inspired when they tell him how much a song means to them. That lifts him up and encourages to write even more as he seeks to connect. “The special moments are when people tell you that through a song they had a kind of key moment in life. My song Marry Me apparently encouraged some to make a request to their loved one. Ridin Solo, I was told, helped someone through a difficult time after a college relationship came to an end. That’s what inspires me: to continue writing songs for my fans.”

Jason is multi-talented, of course, and would be happy to cross over into other forms of entertainment. Having conquered the pop world, he’d be keen to embark on an acting career if the right roles presented themselves.

“Yes and my dream would be to play in a movie for which I wrote the screenplay myself. I would very much like to design a script for a movie or a series. If that does not work out, that’s totally okay.”

He has continued to release singles through the past year, with If I’m Lucky out a year ago, followed by Tip Toe, Colors and Goodbye.

He says If I’m Lucky was special. “The special thing about the song is that it can be perceived quite differently. On the one hand, it has a cool beat to dance to. On the other hand, it is a love song that you can identify with. It’s about having a relationship that’s apparently great, but for some reason does not work. But just because it does not work in this life does not mean it will not work in the next one.”
