Thousands gather in Stourbridge for lights switch-on

Crowds gathered in the town centre for the day-long event which saw music, Minions from Despicable Me, and markets highlighted.

Fairground rides and a land train formed part of the festive celebrations which spanned the length of the High Street.

Stourbridge Dance Academy, Got 2 Sing Choir, Show Call Academy of Performing Arts, Centre Stage Dance Academy, Saxual Emotion and V4 all performed.

Soloists Issy Winstabley, Holly-Mayy, Eliza May and Emma Pryce also entertained.

Black Country Radio played festive tunes on the stage by the Ryemarket throughout the day – with Santa at home nearby in his grotto.

BBC WM presenter Caroline Martin turned on the lights – with the help of the Minions and competition winner Ashley Knott, aged five.

Mayor of Dudley Councillor David Stanley said: "This was a really enjoyable event. The Christmas market added such a festive air to the town and it was lovely to see the children’s faces whenever they saw the Minions.

"We were really lucky to have such a talented range of performers who helped to make the day so special and I hope that it will encourage people to shop locally and enjoy all that Stourbridge has to offer.

"There will also be community-led light switch on events in the borough during November and December."
