The Keg and Comfort in Wolverhampton has been named the 2019 Cider Pub of the Year by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA).

The micropub was opened by Louise Clive on the site of a former Barclays bank on Stafford Road, Oxley, last year and judges were impressed with the selection of ciders on offer.

The venue is one of a number that have sprung up in the Black Country in recent years and offers and alternative to the traditional pub with no loud music, fruit machines or television. The Keg and Comfort serves five ciders and four real ales.

Dawn Doughty, branch cider officer at CAMRA, said that the Keg and Comfort was one of six pubs shortlisted from suggestions made by all branch members, which were visited by a group of judges who were assessing not just the quality of the ciders sampled but also knowledge of the subject. Each pub was also assessed on its welcome and atmosphere.

Ms Doughty that although the top three scores were very close, the Keg and Comfort edged ahead of the runners up, the Lych Gate Tavern and the Hail to the Ale, by scoring well in all qualifying criteria. Ms Clive was presented with the award on Saturday.
