Football? Give me a Royal Wedding any day, says Lisa Harrison

Balls to the FA Cup final!

The only good thing about it is that it marks the end of the football season. . . that is until the Play Off final, Champions League final and let’s not forget the World Cup starts a few weeks later for a whole month.

Which is what is so very appealing about getting swept away by all the heady romance of the Royal Wedding. Seeing Prince Harry and Meghan Markle tie the knot and the enchantment of it all is so much more entertaining than 22 men kicking a ball on a pitch.

Watching the celebrity guests arrive in their finery and discovering who got an invite to the grand event. The anticipation of a glimpse of Meghan’s much-talked about gorgeous gown. Who will the designer be? What style will she be wearing? How will she arrive?

Royal Wedding

Waiting to witness Prince Harry’s face as his bride walks down the aisle, watching the rest of the Royal Family see their loved ones say their vows, the kiss on the balcony – there’s so much expectation and it’s going to be a real spectacle.

The streets of Windsor will undoubtedly be lined with emotional and patriotic fans of the Royals, a sea of red, white and blue flags – maybe some stars and stripes too – waving in the breeze along with personalised placards held high declaring messages of love and joy for the happy couple on the momentous occasion.

Everyone loves a wedding and even though we won’t get to see the lavish reception, the first dance or their extravagant cake, we can at least feel part of a little piece of royal history all from the comfort of our own homes.

Marriage? At least the cup final brings intrigue says Peter Madeley

There is every chance that tomorrow’s FA Cup final between Manchester United and Chelsea may not be a vintage renewal.

José Mourinho’s United are undoubtedly the most boring side every assembled for around half a billion quid, while the lack of effort put in by Chelsea’s pampered superstars in recent months has mirrored the ‘couldn’t care less’ attitude of soon-to-be departing boss Antonio Conte. But however bad the Wembley showpiece turns out to be, it will still make for far better viewing than the Royal Wedding.

And the whole affair has an added zest thanks to the feud between the two managers, who it is fair to say cannot stand the sight of each other.

At the very least, the cup final brings a touch of mystique and intrigue.

Chelsea and Manchester United meet in Saturday’s FA Cup final

With the Royal Wedding we know exactly what we are getting – several hours of vomit-inducing guff as Harry and Meghan tie the knot at great expense to the taxpayer.

So we are left with the usual bog-standard ceremony, which will be made all the more painful to watch by the ‘expert’ analysis.

With events in Windsor due to be done and dusted by 2pm, it is possible to watch both the wedding and the football.

But the early part of the afternoon is better spent involved in more constructive endeavours. Mow the lawn, enjoy a few pre-match ales in the local, and then settle down for the main event.

Even if the FA Cup turns out to be as dull as dishwater, it will still make for more interesting viewing than watching two strangers get married.
