The original Dakota will fly over Dudley's Himley Hall thanks to the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight team.

It will form part of this month's Armed Forces Day celebration, which is expected to draw in the crowds on June 30.

Councillor David Stanley, Mayor of Dudley, said: "The fly past will be a striking and memorable tribute to those who have fallen in the service of this country."

The Dakota ZA947 became one of the world's most famous military transport aircraft and was widely used by the Allies during the Second World War.

It has been painted to represent Dakota FZ692 of No 233 Squadron, which was around the D-Day period in 1944.

This aircraft, which was named ‘Kwicherbichen’ by her crews, was involved in para-dropping operations on the eve of D-Day.

It was later used in re-supply and casualty evacuation missions in combat areas.

Councillor Stanley added: "Armed Forces Day allows us to reflect on the sacrifices that have been made by those who have served and those who continue to serve in the Armed Forces.

"Alongside the recognition of these dedicated people, Armed Forces Day is also a chance for the whole family to enjoy a range of entertainment and activities in the beautiful grounds of Himley Hall and Park.”

Celebrations, organised by Dudley Council and Black Country Radio, will commemorate the work of servicemen and women from 11am until 5pm.

The flypast taking place during the free event, which is supported by Fieldings Auctioneers and Thomas Jones Funfairs, has been scheduled for 1.20pm.

Families will also have the chance to enjoy vintage fairground rides, Punch and Judy shows, alongside a string of craft, food and vintage stalls.

A large display of historic military vehicles will return to the grounds., while Dudley Army Cadet Force will offer paint balling and Kingswinford Air Cadet squadron will host an archery range.

Pete’s War Time Show and Victory Gal Melissa are expected to keep the crowds entertained with classic war time era songs and stories.

The team flying the Dakota are formed of serving RAF aircrew who also operate six Spitfires, two Hurricane Mk 2Cs, a Lancaster as well as a C47 Dakota and two Chipmunk aircraft.

These aircraft will be regularly seen in the skies across the UK during celebratory events between until September.
