Various layouts showed a couple sharing a cheeky kiss, a selection of model trains, buses, houses as well as figurines of people waiting for trains.

The exhibition had 21 layouts and eight stalls t the Gravel Hill venue.

Bryan Shear, spokesman for the event, said: "It's an excellent exhibition. Numbers were up by about 20 per cent and we had quite a lot of families and children, which was good because they're the modellers of the future.

"We had 230 adults, 325 concessions – senior citizens and children between 12 and 16 – then 65 children under 12.

"We had quite a varied selection of layouts – with one layout depicting Cuba and Latin America, one depicting the Severn Valley Railway, a novelty one built on a tray with buses and trains going around, another on a fictitious gold mine in mid-Wales.

"We also had the Big Big Train, which was only available in the UK in the late 60s. The kids were mesmerised by that.

"There was quite a good selection from the UK and European layouts."

Mr Shear added: "We would like to thank all our supporters who worked hard all day, our catering people, our paramedic, Joe and the staff from the Civic Centre and of course for the support of Wombourne Parish Council and the councillors."

John Collins, Neil Baker and Phil Powell from Kidderminster

The next model railway exhibition will be held at the centre on October 19.
