Oasis moment to treasure at Birmingham's The Night Owl
There was a moment to treasure for Oasis fans at Birmingham's The Night Owl as former drummer Tony McCaroll performed one of the band's tracks live for the first time in over 20 years.
An event was held at the Digbeth venue on August 16 celebrating 25 years of their iconic debut album Definitely Maybe.
McCaroll was giving a Q&A session and signing merchandise for fans, then afterwards he was coaxed on stage to perform the hit Supersonic with tribute band Oasis Maybe.
Definitely Maybe was released in 1994 and went straight to No.1 in the UK album charts, selling more than 2.1 million copies.
McCaroll, who drummed on the album, hasn’t performed an Oasis track or played with a band live in more than 20 years, after leaving them following a gig in Paris that same year. The sold-out crowd, and the band themselves, were in awe at seeing McCaroll behind the drum kit.
“As a tribute band that was an unbelievable situation to find ourselves in. Totally unplanned and totally unrehearsed. What a legend you are Tony McCaroll, big thanks to The Night Owl for putting on the event” they later wrote on Twitter.
The event was organised by Oasis Maybe's drummer Damon Cox and Mazzy Snape, director of PR firm Bread Birmingham and promoter at the Night Owl. Ms Snape added: “We were over the moon when Tony agreed to play drums for one track, we didn’t think it would ever happen but dropped a few hints throughout the night, he was enjoying the event and I think the mood just took him.
"Even his partner of 20 years Sue was welling up and completely in shock as she’d never seen him perform with a band.
"We just didn’t imagine it would be this good!”
Oasis Maybe are due to return to The Night Owl on November 16, with tickets available from The Ticket Sellers.
