Singing superstar Sir Rod Stewart is to play Molineux next summer in the first big concert to be staged there in 15 years, it has been revealed.

Thousands will turn out for the show three weeks after the end of Wolves’ season on Saturday, June 8 as the rock legend – now aged 73 – performs to support of the release of his 30th studio album Blood Red Roses.

Tickets to see Sir Rod go on general sale next Friday and will cost up to £125 for a front row seat, however Wolves season ticket holders and members will be able to purchase pre-sale tickets on Thursday.

Sarah Rhodes, from Rhodes Media which is handling PR for the tour, said 25,000 tickets are available for the gig.

Molineux has a 31,000 capacity, but one stand is expected to be blocked off for the stage and temporary seats will be installed on the pitch for the all-seater gig.

The last open air show at the football stadium was in 2003 when 34,000 people packed in to see Bon Jovi.

Although Sir Rod played at Shrewsbury Town's ground last year, this is the first time he has toured his home country for three years and the Molineux performance will be the fifth of seven concerts at venues across England and Scotland.

Fans can expect to hear classics such as Maggie May, The First Cut is the Deepest and Hot Legs, as well as tracks from the new album.

'Significant for the city'

Wolves Managing Director Laurie Dalrymple said: “It has been 15 years since Molineux hosted a live music event, so today’s announcement is very significant for both Wolves and the city of Wolverhampton.

“Attracting top performers like Rod Stewart to Wolverhampton is part of our wider strategic plan to make Molineux a multi-purpose entertainment destination that welcomes visitors from the city and further afield.

“We will work closely with the city council to ensure a successful event that drives local economy whilst being considerate to residents.”

Sir Rod is one of the best-selling artists of all time, with more than 200 million records sold worldwide, and is releasing Blood Red Roses almost 50 years to the date from when he signed his first solo recording contract.

The 13-track album released on September 28 is described as a 'deeply personal' collection of originals and covers and follows Another Country which was released in 2015.
